TEAM ACCOMPLISHMENTS

this post will be lengthy, but worth the time spent reading. it is important to mention everything that this team accomplished during the week in waveland, ms. here are the accomplishments:

47 individuals bonded together as one team. students were placed into teams of 4 not based on friendship groups but based on giftedness and abilities to maximize our potential. no complaints – just brand new friends. i was very proud.

on friday, our team collected an offering for the christian life center. the team gave $1,032! it was such a joy to present that gift to the leadership on saturday morning.

two students shared timely devotionals with our team. alex h. on thursday morning shared from luke 9:62 challenging each of us to serve God with no hesitation. on friday morning, marissa w. spoke on trusting God through difficult times referencing ecclesiastes 3:10-11 and jeremiah 29:11.

meals/cleaning. every meal we ate was prepared by the students. every room in the christian life center was cleaned daily by our students as well – even the bathrooms and showers.

clc thrift store. the christian life center has worked hard to become a ministry that will serve the people of waveland, ms for the long-term realizing that the process “is not a race, but a marathon.” they have seen many organizations come and go already. one of their ministries is the thrift store. a thrift store provides inexpensive clothing and household items. it also provides pride and dignity as people use their own money to purchase their needs. our team worked very hard cleaning and sorting donations. another major accomplishment is the electrical work that todd m.’s team accomplished pulling wires to a new expansion unit for the thrift store.

at miss georgia’s house. the family is not involved with the church, but has called on the pastor in recent days following the death of their daughter. the clc had helped to rebuild their home months ago. our team continued the work and relationship by scraping and painting their deck.

at the kuhn house. the kuhn family had their home completely destroyed by the hurricane. at the time, they were covered by insurance - that was until a crooked contractor took their money and left town leaving the family with no home and no money. shortly after, the man of the home was diagnosed with cancer and unable to move out of bed. since then, he has gotten more and more physical strength and was outside each of the days that we worked on his home. our team built a 15-foot high a/c platform. following this accomplishment, the kuhn’s can receive their hvac inspection and move onto putting up drywall and paint.

at the micelli house. lisa micelli is a single-mother whose home was left standing but underwater during the storm surge from the hurricane – nearly everything destroyed. at the time, a different organization stepped in to rebuild her home but did not take the time necessary to remove the mold living in her home. after she moved back into her house, she found herself and her children in the hospital very ill from the mold in her house. the christian life center has since started all over rebuilding her home. our team mudded the drywall, added texture, applied primer, scraped the exterior, used 36 tubes of caulk on the exterior, replaced rotted wood on the exterior, landscaped, and sorted all of her remaining belongings.

at the galvin house. roger has no money left and no home to live in. the christian life center has been working to provide a home for him. much of the interior had been worked on prior to our arrival (electrical, plumbing, drywall, painting). our team began the hard/hot work of preparing the exterior and the kitchen. our team scraped and primed the facea, soffets, and entire shed, washed mold from the siding, removed a large pile of debris, landscaped by moving and stacking large branches, sanded a large kitchen of wood paneling to prepare for the hanging of the kitchen cabinets, sanded and applied polyurethane to cabinet doors, and painted one remaining room in the house.

also, three or our teammates accepted Jesus Christ into their life for the first time, others committed to live their life for God not themselves, and even more made significant decision to realign themselves with God’s will for their life. some amazing stuff that took place within our own team.

SAFELY HOME

we arrived safely home in burlington, vt at 4:00pm this afternoon.
everyone appeared excited to be home, yet sad that the trip had to end.

i'm planning to post a large recap of our team's accomplishments tomorrow morning. there are a number of things that i neglected to post during the week because of time constraints - and they need to be mentioned.

we'll get that up for everyone tomorrow morning. but first, some sleep...

we're eating lunch in jfk airport at this very moment. our final flight is on-time and scheduled to arrive in burlington, vt at 3:50pm.

you can track it here.

THURSDAY EVENING SESSION

Thursday Evening
"Knowing the God who Serves - Changes Us"
John 17:13-19

Because Jesus prayed it, we know it’s important.
Because Jesus prayed it, we know it’s possible.

We gain insight into God’s desire for our lives by noticing the key elements of His prayer.

Jesus prayed that we…

1. would have the full meaure of His joy.

2. would be protected from the evil one.

3. would be sanctified by the truth.
- seperated from sin.
- devoted to God.
- filled with Christ.

4. would be truly sanctified.
- implies that there is a false holiness.

Response
1. devote your life to God.
2. decide to live for Him daily.
3. choose to grow closer to God.

THURSDAY MIDDAY

thanks for your prayers - the weather is much more pleasant today. oh, there isn't anybody pulling out sweathshirts to wear or anything - it's still 90, but the humidity is around 57% and we had some brief rain this morning. that reminds me to also thank you for your prayers concerning the rain. we have only had rain once (this morning) and that was only for 20-25 minutes and barely slowed down any work. so thank you and even more, thank God.

WEDNESDAY SCENES

group photo on waveland beach (where hurricane katrina made landfall)

seafood gumbo at ms. georgia's house

WEDNESDAY RECAP

to be honest, today was a mixed bag.

on one hand, we had some amazing, unforgettable moments. for lunch, we ate authentic cajun seafood gumbo over rice with potato salad. the gumbo was filled with sausage, crab, and shrimp. and it was delicious. we went through roughly 5 gallons of gumbo, 20 pounds of potato salad, rice, and crackers in about 20 minutes. i'm sure the cook was flattered. and in the evening, we hit the beach for a cook-out and much deserved rest, relaxation, and recreation.

on the other hand, the day was incredibly hot and some students were dragging through the work on different occasions (not yours though). we are hoping that a good night's rest and cooler temperatures tomorrow will enable us to reach a point that we can finish our projects by friday.

here are some of the projects that we have been working on:
kuhn house - installing a platform 15 feet in the air to house the a/c unit. the platform has been finished and attached to the wall. we should complete the project tomorrow as we attach the cables and decking.
micelli house - we have scraped, caulked, and primed the outside of the house and mudded the interior walls. tomorrow, we should be applying texture and beginning to apply the primer to the interior. hoping to paint on friday (Lord-willing).
galvin's house - scraped and primed the soffets and facea. scraped and primed the shed. began sanding the finish of the wood paneled walls in the kitchen. we hope to finish sanding tomorrow and hang kitchen cabinets before we leave.
ms georgia's house - scraped, primed, and painted a deck.
clc thrift store - we have been running electricity to a new addition to house the ever-expanding thrift store.
kitchen - our kitchen crew continues to deliver fabulous meals under the supervision of martha mcgraw at each and every meal.

pray for cooler temperatures.
pray for God's Spirit to work in the students' lives as He calls them to make life-changing decisions.

QUICK RECAP

hot day.
good lunch.
more later.
off to the beach...

WEDNESDAY - CHANGE

half-way through our workweek here in waveland, ms, wednesday is a day that i have been looking forward to because of the special things that we'll do today.

first, we have begun a 7am prayer meeting for anyone who would like to start the day in prayer. we're about 10 minutes away right now and it looks like we should have a good number of students lifting their day to God.

second, lunch today will be an authentic cajun gumbo at one of the homes. a local chef who had his home destroyed by the storm and rebuilt by the christian life center has agreed to cook his famous (literally) seafood gumbo. every group will kick out of their morning job at the regular time and meet at his house to eat outside in his yard.

third, this evening we are headed to the beach - the gulf of mexico where katrina made landfall is literally less than 2 miles from our home here in waveland. we're taking swimsuits, volleyballs, footballs, burgers... it should be good. if you want to imagine what it looks like, picture warm water as far as the eye can see, waves gently rolling in, incredibly fine sand that never gets hot, and posts aimlessly sticking into the air where 400 foot piers used to stand that were destroyed by the hurricane.

TUESDAY EVENING SESSION

here are the notes from our tuesday evening session:

Tuesday Evening
"Knowing the God who Serves - Seeks and Saves Us"
Luke 19:1-10

Observations:
Zaccheus had great desire to see Jesus.
Zaccheus received much more than he expected.
Zaccheus was very undeserving of Christ’s service.
Zaccheus was visibly changed by Christ.
This story is not just about Zaccheus.

We can respond correctly to God when we apply the
principles from this story to our own life.

1. Knowing Jesus is desirable.
2. Jesus offers us much more than we expect.
a. forgiveness of sin.
b. acceptance by God.
c. a new life.
d. eternity in heaven.
3. We don’t deserve any of it.
4. A relationship with Jesus Christ will result in an internal change that can be seen by all.

Response
1. Admit the truth of your sin.
2. Acknowledge Jesus as Savior.
a. He is.
b. I need Him.
3. Make full use of your new life.

5-STAR

5-star is the name that i give to the best photographs of the week. i thought you should see this one of andrew e.

TEAM-MANSHIP

at the end of each day, we ask the students to answer this question, "where have you seen God at work today?" based on the truth that God is working all around us and in us each moment of the day, the question becomes an exercise in learning to see and hear God and His voice in our lives.

as students were sharing their answers last night (our first night to ask the question), lee barnett stood up and said that He saw God bring us together as a team to work for Him. and he was absolutely right! not only was he right, but the following student, courtney i., stood up and said she had wrote down the same thing.

God has done an amazing work in bringing us together and we have your prayers and the Spirit of God to thank. this trip is made up of a number of smaller friendship groups and bringing them together as a team is essential to the short-term success in waveland and the long-term impact on our students.

this answer to prayer could be seen on every work team of 4 students and 1 adult who bonded together at their jobsite. it could also be seen around the meal table as groups began to expand and mingle together. it could be seen in the cooperation necessary to get 47 people in the morning with only 4 showers. and in the free-time trip to sonic for refreshments...

God has been good.

MONDAY SCENES

clearing debris

scraping paint.

following all safety guidelines.

sanding.

MONDAY EVENING SESSION

i have decided to post the outline from our evening sessions so that you can follow along with what we are talking about as well as what we are doing.

Monday Evening
"Knowing the God who Serves - Foundations"
Philippians 2:5-11

Who Jesus Was -
God.

What He Did -
Left Heaven
Left His Reputation
Became a Servant
Became a Man
Humbled Himself
Died

As we seek to know the God who serves, there are some important truths that we have to get right.

1. Service defined Christ's life.
2. Jesus was serving somebody far greater than us.
3. Jesus always requires a response.
we accept Him or we reject Him.
4. Because of His service, Jesus was exalted to the highest place.

monday morning

up and at 'em, bright and early monday morning. while 5 of our teammates checked in at 6am to help make the breakfast (and the coffee), the rest of the group joined them at 7 to help eat it all.

the breakfast of eggs, bacon, fruit, cereal, and english muffins was followed by a 2 hour orientation that featured more than the logistical and safety guidelines, it also featured each of the leaders here at the christian life center speak from their heart concerning specific individuals from the community who have had their lives changed by God in recent weeks. it was powerful stuff and a fresh reminder of why we are here.

by 10:30am, all of our groups had received their first assignments and were ready to hit the road:
3 groups were off to help a family by texturing walls for priming and prepping the outside of the home for paint which we hope to accomplish later this week.
2 groups headed off put some oil-based paint on the soffets and fascia for another family.
1 group was gathering supplies to build an exterior stand for some air conditioner units.
2 groups were working in the christian life center thrift store preparing furniture donated by a hotel.
1 group went right to work in the kitchen preparing lunch.

and i went to this blog to give you an update of what we are doing today. of course, i always update blogs while enjoying a strawberry shaved ice slushie - just kidding.

while everyone handled the travel and is feeling well, it is really hot and we have begun hard physical work. pray for our bodies. and pray that your child will be supernaturally drawn to the water cooler several times each day.

ARRIVED SAFELY AND ON-TIME

it's 11:00pm CST and i'm sitting in my bottom bunk in waveland, ms surrounded by 17 guys committed to getting some rest for the beginning of our work week tomorrow morning. across the hall are 30 young ladies about to do the same - sounds like it took them a little longer.

we made it safe and sound with minimal disturbances. our flight out of burlington was an hour and a half late - but the time together as a team in the airport was good. our original itinerary had over 2 hours in jfk to find our next gate and eat some lunch. the delay cramped our style - although there was plenty of time to get to the gate, lunch was a different story. several of the leaders ran to the deli shop by the gate and grabbed 44 wraps and sandwiches to hand to the students as they got on the plane. not what i had pictured... but lunch nevertheless.

our flight out of jfk was also delayed, but we did arrive in waveland, ms at exactly the time we had planned - 9:00pm. we got a quick tour of the facility, had a short meeting with the team to refocus on our mission, met our teams of 5 for the workweek, and got settled into our rooms. it's now 11pm and we're definitely ready for some sleep!

tomorrow starts early. 4 of our students report at 6am for breakfast crew and the rest of the group will be ready to go by 7. orientation starts at 8 and we should be on our worksites by 10:30 for a half morning and full afternoon of work.

everyone seems very excited. pray for us.

PRAY FOR US.

we have large hopes and dreams for katrina project.08. goals that involve lives being changed. and so we ask that you would pray for us daily during the trip (july 06-july 12).

please pray:
1. for physical safety in travel and work.
2. for a supernatural spirit of unity among the students and staff.
3. that God would use us to ignite hope in the lives of Waveland, MS.
4. that we be efficient, effective, and hard-working during construction.
5. that we would be motivated, bold, and fruitful in sharing Christ's love.
6. that the things we see would open our eyes to God's will for our lives.
7. that the things we hear would open our ears to God's voice in our lives.
8. that rain would have no influence on our progress.
9. that the adults on this trip would lead through the promptings of the Holy Spirit.

thank you so much for faithful prayers. our hopes are big, but exactly in line with God's desire for each of us - may He accomplish His work.
